Fire extinguishers manufacturers produce fire fighting gears using different chemicals as per the application type. Handheld extinguishers easily found at common hardware stores for kitchen or garage use, are pressurized with nitrogen gas or CO2, to combat fire flames by propelling a steam of fire extinguishing agent on to fire. They use specialized active material, such as potassium bicarbonate, evaporating fluorocarbon, liquid water, or propelling agent. The highest effective fluorocarbon used for such applications was bromochlorodifluoromethane, also named as halon 1211.
After international agreement release, all the production of distinct range of halons ceased in 1994 due to presence of chlorine and bromine atoms in the chemical. These two atoms were found to migrate over time to the stratosphere and caused ozone depletion at faster rate. By giving acceptance to this agreement, manufacturers from across the world were bound to produce fire extinguishers that do not contain such harmful agents. They were more trying to manufacture eco-friendly fire fighting gears to protect people and their assets from fire loss without harming air and surrounding environment.
Water sprinklers are most common type of fire fighting fixed-based system. These are inexpensive, safe, and extremely reliable. However, you can’t really ignore the water damage (such as – in computer or electronics room); it is at times ineffective (such as- fuel storage system); it is impractical where space and weight are limited (aircraft). For such places, fire extinguishing equipments manufacturers use distinct materials to combat different situations in effective way.
CO2 works extremely well, but not at crowded place. Bromotrifluoromethane is a close cousin to halon 1211; however, it has lower toxic level properties and boiling point, which make it perfect chemical of choice for applications where water sprinklers fail to perform or cannot be considered.
Currently, fire extinguishers manufacturers are making HFCs based equipments. HFCs have similar physical properties like halons and do not promote ozone depletion. Such fire extinguishers work like CO2 or N2- by absorbing heat and lowering the O2 level. By cutting the O2 supply, these equipments are able to control fire. The manufacturing companies are also working and developing better means of discharging conventional chemicals, including N2, CO2, and H2O. When fire fighters use such systems, they would be able to extinguish a fire just as you blow out a candle.
